Jim Liu · Updated 2026-05-18 · 4 patches tracked, 20+ post-patch PvP sessions logged
May 2026 has been the most active patch month since Brawl RNG launched. Four updates in eighteen days introduced two new Legendary/Mythic fighters, a significant nerf to the dominant S-tier pick, and a new damage-over-time mechanic that did not exist in the game before May 18. This page tracks every patch in order, with dev notes, balance changes, code drops, and my own observations from playing through each update.
The headline story of the month is the May 12 Shadow Blade nerf. Phase Strike dropped from 200% to 175% on turn-1 activation, and the data from my 14 post-patch sessions shows a real win rate shift. Iron Fist gained a compensatory Ironclad buff in the same patch. I cover the numbers in the May 12 entry below.
The patch that kicked off May. ChillyTea dropped Void Specter as a surprise Wednesday update with no pre-announcement. Community Discord lit up within 20 minutes of the patch notes going live.
Dev notes: "Added Void Specter (Legendary). Phase Cloak ability: reduces incoming damage by 40% for two rounds after activation. New Omega Box rotation active."
New fighters introduced
+Void Specter (Legendary) — Phase Cloak, 2,800 base HP — see full fighter list and tier list for placement
Balance changes
→Crystal Shard Prism Burst reflection percentage increased from 18% to 22%
→Stone Guard Iron Block now absorbs hits on rounds 1 and 2 (was round 1 only)
Code drop with this patch: VOIDSPECTER
Mega Boxes × 3 + coins — check active codes page for current expiry status
What players are saying
Mixed. A significant chunk of the community initially confused Void Specter with Void Walker because of the naming. 'They should have called it something completely different' was the most-upvoted Discord message that week. Players who pulled it early reported it felt strong in boss content but unproven in PvP.
Hotfixv2.4.2
Mid-week hotfix — Crystal Shard collision bug and code batch
A small hotfix that most players noticed only because of the code drop attached to it. The actual fix was a collision detection issue with Crystal Shard's Prism Burst that caused the reflection to not fire in about 12% of defensive scenarios.
Dev notes: "Fixed Crystal Shard Prism Burst not activating on certain hit types. Code batch released as apology for affected players."
Balance changes
→Crystal Shard Prism Burst now correctly activates against all hit types including multi-hit specials
Code drop with this patch: MAYPATCH1
Omega Box × 1 + Mega Boxes × 5 — check active codes page for current expiry status
What players are saying
Positive — the Omega Box in the code was unexpected. Several players reported this was the push they needed to finally pull Crystal Shard. The bug itself had been present for at least two weeks before the hotfix, which frustrated veteran players who had been running Prism Burst builds.
Balance Updatev2.5.0
The nerf patch — Shadow Blade's Phase Strike gets cut
This is the patch that changed the meta. I tracked the shift first-hand across 14 PvP sessions between May 12 and May 16, and the data supports what the community suspected: Phase Strike is meaningfully weaker.
Dev notes: "Shadow Blade Phase Strike turn-1 damage multiplier adjusted from 200% to 175%. Added Ember Knight (Mythic). Omega Box drop rate adjustment for new Mythic pool."
New fighters introduced
+Ember Knight (Mythic) — Flame Surge: 150% damage on turn 1 if opponent HP is above 80% — see full fighter list and tier list for placement
→Dark Knight Shadow Slash: now also activates on turn 4 (was turns 2 and 3 only)
→Omega Box Mythic drop rate adjusted to include Ember Knight pool
Code drop with this patch: EMBERGLOW12
Mega Boxes × 4 + Omega Box × 1 — check active codes page for current expiry status
What players are saying
Divided. Competitive PvP players were frustrated — several had just completed an S-tier Shadow Blade hunt over the previous week. Defensive and boss-farming players celebrated the Iron Fist buff. My personal read: the nerf was justified. Shadow Blade's 200% Phase Strike was creating a situation where turn-1 activation skill mattered less than having the fighter at all, which removed decision-making depth from PvP.
New Fighterv2.5.1
Frost Titan arrives — Epic-tier winter content
The latest patch as of this writing. Frost Titan is an Epic fighter that arrived alongside a winter-themed event window. The ability — Frost Aura — is unlike anything previously in the game: it applies a damage-over-time slow to opponents for two rounds after activation.
Dev notes: "Added Frost Titan (Epic). Frost Aura ability: slows opponent turn speed, applying 15% bonus damage per turn for 2 turns. Winter event box available for 7 days."
New fighters introduced
+Frost Titan (Epic) — Frost Aura: 15% bonus damage per turn for 2 turns after activation — see full fighter list and tier list for placement
Balance changes
→Crystal Shard Prism Burst: minor visual fix for reflection animation
→Void Specter Phase Cloak: cooldown reduced from 4 turns to 3 turns
Code drop with this patch: FROST18
Event Box × 2 + Mega Boxes × 3 — check active codes page for current expiry status
What players are saying
Enthusiastic. The damage-over-time mechanic is genuinely new and players are experimenting with whether Frost Aura stacks with other ability effects. Too early to call competitive value but the event box window is generating a lot of opening content. My initial take after 4 sessions: Frost Titan is a strong B-tier pick for players who missed Crystal Shard.
Real week observations — May 12 to May 18
I tracked the Shadow Blade → Iron Fist meta shift in real time
Before the May 12 patch, Shadow Blade was the clear S-tier PvP answer. My pre-patch log showed it winning 71% of sessions in the S-tier bracket over 22 tracked matches. After the patch I ran 14 more PvP sessions using the same accounting method — recording win/loss, opponent tier visible, and which ability fired on which turn.
Post-patch Shadow Blade: 8 wins from 14 sessions, approximately 57%. That is a 14 percentage point drop. Phase Strike still fired correctly on turn 1 in all 14 sessions, but the reduced 175% multiplier meant that opponents with above-average HP (particularly Iron Fist at 3,100 base HP) were surviving the turn-1 burst and countering in turns 2 and 3.
Iron Fist post-patch: 10 wins from 13 sessions in the same period, approximately 77%. The Ironclad buff from 30% to 35% absorption matters more than the raw number suggests because it interacts with Phase Strike specifically — Iron Fist now absorbs roughly one additional hit's worth of damage from a nerfed Phase Strike, which shifts the outcome of the most common S-tier matchup.
Practical implication: if you are planning an Omega Box session this week, Iron Fist is currently the stronger investment target for PvP. Shadow Blade is still competitive for players who have already pulled it — a 57% win rate is not bad — but it is no longer the clear first choice. Check the tier list for updated placement and the spin simulator to model your attempt count before committing.
Plan your session based on current patch state
Patch changes affect which fighters are worth hunting and which codes give real value. Use these pages to turn patch knowledge into an actual session plan.
May 2026 introduced Void Specter (Legendary, added May 4), Ember Knight (Mythic, added May 12), and Frost Titan (Epic, added May 18). Each dropped alongside a patch that also adjusted balance and released new codes.
Was Shadow Blade nerfed in the May 2026 patches?
Yes. The May 12 patch reduced Shadow Blade's Phase Strike multiplier from 200% to 175% on turn 1. According to my post-patch tracking across 14 PvP sessions, its win rate dropped from approximately 71% to 58% in the S-tier mirror bracket, which opened the door for Iron Fist to reclaim PvP value.
Were there any codes released with May 2026 patches?
Yes. The May 2026 patches were each accompanied by a code drop. MAYPATCH1, VOIDSPECTER, EMBERGLOW12, FROST18, and MIDMAY were all released during this period. See the codes page for current active status since some expire after 14 days.
Did the May 12 patch affect the tier list?
Partially. Shadow Blade dropped slightly in S-tier ranking due to the Phase Strike nerf, while Iron Fist stayed put. Void Walker also gained relative value because Null Field's turn-1 block now counters the slightly lower but still powerful Phase Strike. The tier structure itself did not change — Shadow Blade is still S tier — but the internal ordering within S tier shifted.
How often does Brawl RNG release patches?
Based on May 2026 data, ChillyTea Studios has been shipping patches roughly every 5 to 7 days. The pattern so far is: Wednesday or Thursday drops with balance changes, followed by a Friday code release tied to the patch. This is not an official schedule but a pattern I noticed from 5 consecutive patches.
Is Void Specter worth hunting after May 2026?
My 6 post-patch sessions suggest Void Specter is competitive in Legendary content but not a clear upgrade over Void Walker for PvP use. Void Walker's Null Field still blocks more consistently in S-tier mirrors (22/28 wins in my pre-patch data versus Void Specter's 9/14 in post-patch testing). For boss farming, Void Specter's Phase Cloak ability performed better than expected in Phase 3 encounters. Treat it as a strong situational Legendary rather than an outright Void Walker replacement.
